Community Affairs Specialist – Artisanal Mining – Gauteng

Working within the Community Development Team focusing on Small Scale and Artisanal Mining you will be responsible for developing and implementing processes relating to all land use issues and effective management of all such relationships within communities across the African continent.

Responsibilities
• Contribute to a coherent and innovative strategy to deal with Artisinal and Small Scale Mining (ASM) and land access issues.
• Assist in the development and lead the implementation of an ASM strategy to support activities in the region and in key African countries
• Provide technical specialist advice to all countries and mine sites to develop and roll-out country and site specific ASM strategies.
• Draft land and artisanal mining policies, protocols, processes, templates and tools.
• Provide training so that the relevant parties are capable of adhering to the land and artisanal mining policy.
• Provide technical advice to ensure that proper systems and procedures are in place and followed at each mine site.

Minimum Requirements
• A Masters degree or equivalent in a sustainability-related field such as environment, international development, social sciences or rural economics.
• Fluency in French advantageous.
• A minimum of 10 years’ experience in working on development and preferably ASM issues within Africa.
• Demonstrated experience in ASM and land management issues would be a strong advantage.
• Demonstrated experience in working effectively with partners and managing consultants
• Ability to build trust and effectively engage with local and national stakeholders and develop stratgic partnerships to leverage resources and coordinate activities with internal and external partners including governments, donors and the private sector.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills as demonstrated through project proposals, publications, reports or related materials.
